    Abstract:

Many studies have shown that family socioeconomic status (SES) significantly influences students’ academic achievement (AA), but others have found the opposite to be true in different countries and regions. Parental educational involvement (PI) is also an important factor influencing students' AA, but few studies have examined it in mediating family SES and students' AA. This study was conducted with a sample of sixth-grade students in rural Dujiangyan City. It was found that family SES significantly affected students' AA, and PI also significantly affected students' AA, and PI played a fully mediating role in the relationship between family SES affecting students' AA. It was also found that there were significant differences in the AA of students in some categories of family structural background, for example, children from single-parent families had significantly lower AA than those from non-single-parent families, and the AA of left-behind children was significantly lower than that of non-left-behind children, but there were no significant differences in AA in the category of only-children or non-only-children. There is also a significant difference in the AA of students by gender, with girls significantly outperforming boys.
